Can you help me with my new atiel?

I just got a new atiel from a friend. The bird seems very disturbed. She/he has mirrors everywhere so i immediately took them out thinking that maybe thats what made the bird so upset. I know that she wasn't paid much attention to. I know that her flight wings need to be clipped-I want to do it, but am afraid that I will really hurt her. I have purchased toys for the bird and have rainforest sounds in the background that seem to really calm her down-not the toys, she hasn't touched those yet. How do I get this bird to trust me and be more social-Should I get the bird a friend? Also, how do I know if the bird is male or female-the bird is pied and the last owners said she was female but I've read alot of characteristics that she has that may be considered male. Thanks!
