What tool can I use to find the angle of elevation?

I want something that I can use to find an angle of elevation to determine the height of geological features. I'm looking for a handheld tool I can carry with me while hiking. This is something I would use to estimate the height of something like a stone column or a cliff face, etc. I've looked at some levels but they are kind of expensive. Is there something else that I could use?
